Part 2- Australiana True Stories

Thru Karls eyes

I think it was a Saturday about 11 am from memory.

At remote Cherabun Station via Fitzroy Crossing we were sitting around an empty old Telstra wooden Cable spool for a Table chatting in the Shed as bush blokes often do.

From memory there were four of us, Stretch the Station Mechanic, Morry Young, myself, I forget the other blokes name.

The conversation was small talk and amicable but I had work to do so I said see you later fellows.

My Government 4x4 was parked over near the Homestead only a few minutes away.

But by the time I got underway and drove past the Shed the conversation had soured unknown to me. .

Morry had been an Australian Soldier in WW 11 and said something about WW 11 the other bloke said was Crap, the argument was brief, then the bloke (I can’t recall) threatened Morry.

Morry grabbed a .303 leaning against the Shed wall and Shot the bloke through the Heart !

Straight through the bloke and nearly into my leaving Toyota ! they showed me later that it was my lucky day not to get shot too !

Later in Court in Broome Morry charged with Murder, was asked by the Judge did you Pull the trigger and Kill that man Mr Young ?

Morry replied ………No your Honour I squeezed the trigger !

Morry got three years in Broome jail as he had been threatened by a man with a past homicide, Stretch, I had known for years was a Navy deserter, Stretch was of course a witness to the Shooting.

Stretch got a lot bigger sentence than Morry ! for desertion, and probably other offences, such were the men that made up a lot of the Kimberley not that long ago.
